Limekiln State Park is a California state park on the Big Sur coast. It contains four lime kilns from an 1887–1890 lime-calcining operation, plus a beach, redwood forest, and 100-foot (30 m) Limekiln Falls. [1] It is located 2 miles (3.2 km) south of Lucia on Big Sur Coast Highway. The 711-acre (288 ha) park was established in 1994. [2]
A proposal to close a portion of this park placed it on the list of 48 California state parks proposed for closure in January 2008 by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger as part of a deficit reduction program. The decision was rescinded following public outcry. [5] However, in May 2011 the park was one of 70 state parks threatened with closure. [6]
The park and lake support outdoor recreation such as camping, picnicking, horseback riding, hiking, sail and power-boating, water-skiing, fishing, swimming, boat-in camping, floating campsites, and horse camping. [3] There is a visitor center with interpretive exhibits and a 47-foot (14 m) observation tower overlooking the lake and dam. [4]
