General Hospital is an American television soap opera, airing on ABC.Created by Frank and Doris Hursley, the serial premiered on April 1, 1963. John Beradino, whose career began as American Major League Baseball player, originated the role of Steve Hardy in the serial's premiere episode and made his final appearance on April 23, 1996, [1] making him one of the longest-serving soap opera actors.

In 2023, Charlie Mason from Soaps She Knows placed Ryan and Kevin as a shared entry (at #33 and #32) on his ranked list of General Hospital's 40+ Greatest Characters of All Time, commenting "Arguably the ultimate good-and-evil-twin pairing, these siblings have been making the residents of Port Charles say, "Oh, brother!" since the early 1990s.

The character is an adaptation of the fictional vampire character Caleb Morley, originated by Easton on the General Hospital spin-off Port Charles from 2001 to 2003. When Caleb was killed at the end of "Tempted," he eventually returned during the story arc "Naked Eyes," this time in the guise of the vampire rock star "Stephen Clay."
