It was the home and graveyard of one of Charleston's oldest families, the Gillilands. They built the log cabins and lived there until selling it to the Neale family in 1868. [2] It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1984 as part of the South Hills Multiple Resource Area. [1]

Early instances of western Virginia plantations with grand homes include the John Ariss-designed Harewood (1774) for George Washington's brother Samuel Washington and Happy Retreat (1780) built by Washington's younger brother Charles Washington, both of which are located near Charles Town in present-day Jefferson County.
It encompasses 444 contributing buildings in a predominantly residential section of Charleston. The majority of the homes in the district were constructed in the mid to late 1925s and early 1930s and a portion of the district was the location of a local amusement park, Luna Park , from 1912 until 1923.
