Maybe its in my head, but all the hardhead sticks I've had (or minor scratches for that matter) sure hurt worse and stung longer than any freshwater catfish I've had get me. The worst was a small mudcat that went all the way through my middle finger just under the nail!!!!! ouch!!!! Also saw one guy try to stomp on a hardhead to kill it.
Here are a couple of sharks that fell victim to Hardhead baits. I've also caught reds on them. I clip the fins on all of them for safety reasons. On big ones, I cut off the head and tail and just fish the meaty body. I fish smaller ones whole, and usually live. I've never tried them BTB, but there's no reason to think they wouldn't work out ...
$10k bill for a catfish finning makes me feel much better about my rapala gripers (cheap boga knock-off) and needle nose pliers investment. i've heard gafftop are good eating but then again, i don't much care for freshwater catfish so i doubt i'll be trying that out anytime soon.

I'd put ladyfish in there with the catfish and jack crevelle. I always feel disappointed when I hook them in spite of their aerial display. When they move in in numbers, I move out. Fishing lures, I seldom get catfish but a big Gaftop will occasionally smoke a topwater. I wouldn't mind them so much, but they slime the leader.

I just came back from my third trip in 2 months down to Bolivar Penninsula and except for one trip, struck out!! The last two times we have been we have caught a couple redfish less than 20", stringray and hardhead catfish. We are putting in at the end of Tuna Drive. This is where the big water tank is right off the road.
Hardhead catfish were hitting Mirrolures! They must have been starving!! Top. Kingwood Kayaker TKF 1000 Club
As for fish that I have caught in Armand Bayou: Black Bass, Crappie, bluegill, blue catfish, channel catfish, freshwater drum, various gar species, tilapia, redfish, speckled trout, hardhead catfish, ladyfish, sand trout, and flounder. It really is a magical place. Your next cast could result in an oversized redfish or a fryer sized channel cat.
Got nailed in the shin by a hardhead about 6 weeks ago. fin penetrated more than 3/4" and it took all I had to remove the fish without breaking the barb off. my whole leg hurt for about 24 hours. The exact kind of pain you are talking about. I couldn't touch it from the hip down for about 4 hours then it felt like the whole leg was brused.
