Anyone have any experience with the N scale Big boys. I have been looking at the Athearn, Broadway Limited, Kato, and Bachman I just noticed has one. I do like the Athearns looks the best because the drivers are much more visible (Brighter). I like to see the articulation on this Locomotive esp in this smaller scale its nice.

Something, I learned from my earlier days in HO, S and O scale. I will echo others: The track must be laid meticulously (be a perfectionist). The wider radius is the best radius. 18" Minimum. Track joints must be smooth and not kinked. Everything from wheel sets to track must be to proper gauge. Purchase an NMRA N Scale gauge.

N is more portable, most of the modular clubs in my part of the country (Southern California) are N scale (N-Trak/T-Trak/Free-Mo), so N is more visible than HO is in the local train shows. People are just used to smaller things these days - compare an iPhone to a Cordless phone from the '80s, or a micro-SD card to a 5" floppy disk, for example.

Modern auto racks either use 33" or 28" wheels. The majority actually use 33". The only N scale models whose prototype uses 28" wheels are the ScaleTrains MultiMax autorack (and they already come with 28" metal wheels anyway) and the Atlas Thrall articulated auto rack, which ran either 28" or 33" wheels, depending on load weight.

Set two N scale autos side by side with a small space between and measure. You could selectively compress to 1" of you don't have cars side by side and don't mind doing w/o shoulders. ge-maN , Jul 17, 2010

This really has never been done before on the mass production North American market. Bob Grubba is really smart and crafty with his development of HO scale steam engines so Im sure this N scale Big Boy will be very nice. I personally think this might be a changing trend in N scale. Details on this engine are listed below

I have an N scale Bachman DC 0-6-0 (switcher I think) that came in a a basic Yard Boss set. When I set it next to my N Scale FEF-3 its about half the length. The 0-6-0 Loco is about 2-1/2" long and pretty lean. It is hard to believe they can make a scale smaller than N that functions normal. This 0-6-0 would be tiny.

As some of you have seen, ScaleTrains has announced the SD40T-2 in N scale. For those of us that bought big into the same Intermountain unit, but were disappointed in its quality, this is a tempting choice but difficult to justify the astronomical cost of replacing a single unit much less the fleet.
