The syllabus of the examination is based on topics covered by the Board of High School and Intermediate Education Uttar Pradesh, Central Board of Secondary Education and Indian School Certificate board examinations, though all topics are not included in the syllabus. The pattern of questions in the exam is almost fixed.

In 1958/59 four-year degree programmes in Textile Technology and Textile Chemistry were started. Initially the institute was affiliated to Agra University. [8] On establishment of the university in Kanpur in 1966 it was affiliated to Kanpur University. In 1976/77 the institute pioneered a four-year degree programme in man-made fibre technology.
