Jorge Francisco Isidoro Luis Borges Acevedo (/ ˈ b ɔːr h ɛ s / BOR-hess; [2] Spanish: [ˈxoɾxe ˈlwis ˈboɾxes] ⓘ; 24 August 1899 – 14 June 1986) was an Argentine short-story writer, essayist, poet and translator regarded as a key figure in Spanish-language and international literature.
Labyrinths (1962, 1964, 1970, 1983) is a collection of short stories and essays by Argentine writer and poet Jorge Luis Borges.It was translated into English, published soon after Borges won the International Publishers' Prize with Samuel Beckett.
The book is completed by one of the Borges' most noted essay-stories, which also appears in his acclaimed Ficciones: El acercamiento a Almotásim (in English: The Approach to Al-Mu'tasim), and a short and tasteful review of satiric literature and classical insults (El arte de injuriar, in English: The Art of Insulting).

The story tells about a character who mistakenly achieves immortality and then, weary of a long life, struggles to lose it and writes an account of his experiences. The story consists of a quote, an introduction, five chapters, and a postscript. "The Immortal" has been described as "the culmination of Borges' art" by critic Ronald J. Christ. [2]
English was born at 22 Lysons Road in Aldershot, [1] [2] Hampshire, the son of Walter Frederick English (1856–1948) [3] and Ethel English (née Parsons) (1886–1975), who married at Holy Trinity church in Aldershot in 1909. Arthur English had two older brothers: Walter (born 1910) and John Edgar (born 1912).
