The Sheepscot Historic District encompasses a historic village in Alna and Newcastle, Maine. Located just below the mouth of Dyer Brook where it enters the Sheepscot River , the 1,200-acre (490 ha) includes an area that has seen little alteration in more than 100 years, [ 2 ] and includes one of the oldest roadways in the state.
The property includes fourteen cabins, sited to give views of Somes Sound. They are stylistically varied, with some built in the style of traditional Maine log cabins, and others in modern architectural styles. Most provide accommodations for up to four guests, although some only have space for two, and the Rowse House accommodates eight.
Town water was laid into the area in 1919, and the Boothbay Land Company then proceeded to develop the eastern side of the peninsular, building about 60 cabins by 1930. The West Branch Sheepscot River joins the main stem between Cooper's Mills and North Whitefield. The river is bridged by Maine State Route 126 at North Whitefield and by concurrent Maine State Routes 194 and 218 at Whitefield.
