The men's association football gold medal match of the 2023 SEA Games was contested by Indonesia and Thailand at the Olympic Stadium in Phnom Penh on 16 May 2023. Omani referee Qasim Al-Hatmi issued a SEA Games record 13 yellow cards and 9 red cards, setting a new record for cautions at any SEA Games tournament.
The men's football tournament at the 2023 SEA Games was held in Cambodia. Ten Southeast Asian nations entered the men's tournament. [2] Vietnam were the two-time defending champions, but were eliminated in the semi-finals by Indonesia.
Football has been part of the SEA Games sport since the 1959 edition. The women's football competition was held for the first time in 1985 in Thailand. From the 2001 SEA Games to the 2015 SEA Games and again in 2021 SEA Games, the age limit for men's teams was under-23 plus up to three over-aged players for each squad.

The official logo and slogan for the 2023 Southeast Asian Games were decided on 2 July 2020 by the 2023 Cambodian SEA Games Organizing Committee and was officially unveiled on 7 August. A design competition for the games' logo was held in 2019 with the final design reportedly consisting of the Angkor Wat and four dragons as its main motifs.
