The first Biathlon World Championships (BWCH) was held in 1958, with individual and team contests for men. The original team event, Team (time), was held for the last time in 1965, to be replaced in 1966 by the team event, Relay (4 × 7.5 km), which we know today. The number of events has grown significantly over the years.
The Biathlon World Cup is a top-level biathlon season-long competition series. It has been held since the winter seasons of 1977–78 for men and 1982–83 for women. The women's seasons until 1986–87 season were called the European Cup, although participation was not restricted to Europeans.

Beginning at the 1992 Winter Olympics in Albertville, women's biathlon debuted with the 15 km individual, 3 × 7.5 km relay (4 × 7.5 km during 1994–2002, and 4 × 6 km in 2006), and 7.5 km sprint. A pursuit race (12.5 km for men and 10 km for women) was included at the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City .
At the 2015 Biathlon World Cup event in Khanty-Mansiysk, Russia Nathan Smith won the first biathlon World Cup gold medal of his career [3] in the Men's 12.5 km pursuit race. At the Nov. 29, 2015 IBU World Cup in Ostersund, Sweden Canada's Rosanna Crawford and Nathan Smith teamed up to win the silver medal in the season-opening single mixed relay.
In the summer of 2023, Kapustová won silver medals in the sprint and pursuit events at the Summer Biathlon Junior World Championships in Osrblie. She made her World Cup debut in Östersund in the winter of 2023/24 and achieved her first pursuit competition after finishing 56th in the sprint in Hochfilzen .
In the men's 2020–21 Biathlon World Cup total score, for each participating athlete the points earned in all Individual, Sprint, Pursuit and Mass start competitions held during the season are added up with the four lowest scores subtracted at the end of the season to give that athlete's final score.
