The historic center of Mexico City (Spanish: Centro Histórico de la Ciudad de México), also known as the Centro or Centro Histórico, is the central neighborhood in Mexico City, Mexico, focused on the Zócalo (or main plaza) and extending in all directions for a number of blocks, with its farthest extent being west to the Alameda Central. [2]
The district includes 77 contributing buildings and three contributing structures. There are 33 residential buildings, 23 commercial buildings, and 17 outbuildings. It includes the central part of the built-up area of the small rural village of Mexico. Beck's Hotel (1897) is the largest building in the district. [2]
The Plaza is known as Mexico City's home of mariachi music. All throughout the day and night, mariachi bands can be found playing or soliciting gigs from visitors to the Plaza. [ 1 ] The Salón Tenampa, which became the home of mariachi music in Mexico City in the 1920s, is still in business on the north side of the plaza.
It is located on Mexico City's main square, the Plaza de la Constitución . This site has been a palace for the ruling class of Mexico since the Aztec Empire , and much of the current palace's building materials are from the original one that belonged to the 16th-century leader Moctezuma II .
