The road would connect the A5 in the west with the A5124 in the east, creating a complete ring road around Shrewsbury. It will cross the River Severn via a 668 metres (2,192 ft) long viaduct near to the Darwin Trail and be close to sites of scientific interest and an ancient woodland , necessitating the felling of some trees.
The old survives as lane and tracks. The present road began life as a new turnpike built in the late 1820s by the Kidderminster turnpike trust, which had been responsible for the road as far as Quatford since 1760. Bridgnorth only became the northern end of the road in 1821. [3] [4] The trust remained responsible for the road until 1873. [5]

The road starts about one mile north of Craven Arms. From here it travels through Lydham, Churchstoke, Newtown, Caersws, Cemmaes Road and Machynlleth. Between Caersws and Cemmaes Road, the road is concurrent with the A470, which takes priority. Similarly in Lydham, albeit for a much shorter distance, the road overlaps with the A488.
