By 1984, Bealls moved its long-time downtown Jacksonville store operation to a new location on South Jackson Street. A new warehouse and distribution center took shape on the north side of Jacksonville, replacing the warehouse that occupied the rear of the headquarters building. The new operation was opened in 1986.
In 2015, Belk Men's Store was expanded into the former Sears space, adding 50,000 square feet of space for Belk and making it one of Belk's flagship stores. [ 1 ] On February 13, 2017, a Dave and Buster's store opened in the front exterior side of the mall, filling the space vacated by Sears not already filled by the Men's Belk.
Belk was founded in 1888 by William Henry Belk in Monroe, North Carolina, outside Charlotte. The store was first called New York Racket and then Belk Brothers, after Belk made his brother, physician John Belk, his partner. [3] Belk bought in volume to pass savings on and sold at fixed prices, then a relatively unusual practice. [4]
