Its name from its position in the northeastern corner of Erie County, despite being near the extreme northwest of Pennsylvania.

North East Township is a township in Erie County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 6,529 at the 2020 census, [ 2 ] up from 6,315 at the 2010 census , [ 3 ] down from 7,702 in 2000 . Geography
It is bordered to the west, north, and east by Venango Township, and to the south by Amity Township. The New York state border is 2.5 miles (4.0 km) to the east. According to the United States Census Bureau , the borough has a total area of 0.31 square miles (0.8 km 2 ), of which 0.01 square miles (0.03 km 2 ), or 3.72%, is water. [ 6 ]
Interstate 86 crosses the township from east to west, with access from Exit 3 (Pennsylvania Route 89) in the north-central part of the township. I-86 has its western terminus in the northwest corner of the township, where it meets Interstate 90, 11 miles (18 km) east of Erie and 86 miles (138 km) southwest of Buffalo, New York.
