This configuration existed until 1995 when area code 334 was added for the southeastern part of the state. In 1998, area code 256 was assigned for northern Alabama. It had an overlay area code 938 added in 2010, which required ten-digit dialing. The area code 251 in south Alabama was split area code from 334 in 2001.
While tourism is significant in the region, especially further south in the Gulf Shores area, the principal business along the Eastern Shore is retail. Alabama State Route 59 passes along the west side of the town, leading north 5 miles (8 km) to Robertsdale and south 6 miles (10 km) to Foley. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 9.7 square miles (25.2 km 2), of which 9.7 square miles (25.1 km 2) is land and 0.039 square miles (0.1 km 2), or 0.38%, is water. On October 1, 2008, Hackensack University Medical Center North at Pascack Valley opened as "a satellite emergency department to treat non-life-threatening emergencies." [ 26 ] It was ultimately converted in 2013 to a full-service hospital together with for-profit partner LHP Hospital Group (now Ardent Health Services ) .
