The AMC Amitron was an experimental electric subcompact car built in 1967 by American Motors Corporation (AMC) and Gulton Industries.It included many advanced features, including regenerative braking and advanced battery designs, to provide a 150-mile (240 km) range on a single charge.
The car featured run-flat tires, like those of wheeled armoured vehicles, in order to be able to drive all the way to a garage after a puncture and thus avoid having to change a tire by the side of the road. Entry into the car was by the means of two gull-wing doors on the sides. The concept was a three-door, four-seat coupe design.
Another concept car, built by Holden and called the Torana TT36, was rumored to have started as a Kappa-based car with a twin-turbocharged V6, but the modifications necessary to accommodate the engine, transmission, and general vehicle size made it necessary to refer to the platform as "based on architecture similar to the Kappa and the Corvette."
The sales pitch for the concept was "A new car with sports flair." [ 8 ] It was well received at automobile shows before the so-called " pony car " market segment was established. Some show attendees wanted to place orders, AMC dealers asked about production plans, and "Over 60% said they'd like to own a model with the Tarpon's fastback styling."
