Plate from the Harewood House botanical dessert service, probably 1830s-1840s. Coalport, Shropshire, England was a centre of porcelain and pottery production between about 1795 ("inaccurately" claimed as 1750 by the company) [1] and 1926, with the Coalport porcelain brand continuing to be used up to the present.

The museum presents the history of Coalport China, a manufacturer of fine English chinaware which was based on the site between 1795 and 1926. As well as original examples of historic china, there are also demonstrations of traditional ceramic techniques and original industrial buildings including kilns to fire the pottery.

The easternmost part of Coalport was, at one time, served by two railway stations: Coalport East was a terminus of a London and North Western Railway branch from Wellington; it is sited on the northern river bank. As far back as 1000 BCE, the so-called "porcelaneous wares" or "proto-porcelain wares" were made using at least some kaolin fired at high temperatures. This "white ware" body was used for a variety of styles of decoration, all showing great advances in sophistication. Apart from lustreware, the most luxurious type was mina'i ware, which used polychrome overglaze enamelling, the first pottery to do so. This also required a light second firing; some pieces combined the two techniques.
