The first P&O Princess Cruises purpose-built cruise ship was Royal Princess, christened by Princess Diana in 1984, she was the largest new British passenger ship in a decade, and one of the first, if not the first, ships to completely dispense with interior cabins. [6]
Sun Princess is the first ship of the Sphere class. She measures 1,133 feet (345 m) in length with a beam of 155 feet (47 m). The Sphere class has been a major update to the overall design of Princess's ships, featuring a more modern look. Sun Princess also features new glass, dome-like elements visible from the exterior of the vessel.
It is the third ship in Princess fleet to carry this name after the last ship left in May 2011. The ship was officially handed over to Princess on 30 May 2013 and christened by Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge on 13 June 2013.
