Nichols is a town in Tioga County, New York, United States. The town contains a village also called Nichols. The town is on the south border of both the county and the state. The town is halfway between Binghamton and Elmira. The population was 2,357 at the 2020 census. [2] The town is named after Colonel Nichols, an early landowner. [3]

New York State Route 282 (NY 282) is a north–south state highway located within Tioga County in the Southern Tier of New York in the United States. It extends for 3.48 miles (5.60 km) from the Pennsylvania state line in the town of Nichols, where it connects to Pennsylvania Route 187 (PA 187), to an intersection with NY 17C in the town of Tioga.
Along the way, NY 347 intersects NY 25 in Nesconset and Nicolls Road (County Route 97 or CR 97) in Lake Grove. The westernmost 2 miles (3.2 km) of NY 347 is concurrent with NY 454 while the portion northeast of NY 25 parallels NY 25A, which follows a more northerly alignment through the Town of Brookhaven than NY 347.
The former surface routing of NY 17 from Nichols to Owego became part of an extended NY 17C c. 1971. [9] [10] The Waverly–Nichols segment of the STE was completed c. 1974, at which time NY 17 was realigned to follow the freeway [11] [12] while NY 17C was extended west over NY 17's former alignment to Waverly. NY 17 and NY 17J marked on a 1948 topographical map. NY 17 has had 13 suffixed routes bearing 11 different designations. Five are still assigned to their routes, while eight have been removed or renumbered. A fourteenth, NY 17L, was proposed in 1939 as part of current NY 97, but canceled. [90]
