Highway 61 runs through the Nuʻuanu Pali Tunnels, as seen from the Old Pali Highway. Hawaii Route 61, often called the Pali Highway, is in Honolulu County, Hawaii, United States, that is the main highway connecting downtown Honolulu with the windward side of Oʻahu island.
The Pali Highway (Hawaii State Highway 61) connecting Kailua/Kāneʻohe with downtown Honolulu runs through the Nuʻuanu Pali Tunnels bored into the cliffside. The area is also the location of the Nuʻuanu Freshwater Fish Refuge [4] and the Nuʻuanu Reservoir [5] [6] in the jurisdiction of the Hawaiʻi Department of Land and Natural Resources.
The highway passes through the Wilson Tunnel, and takes commuters from the towns of Kāneʻohe and Kailua on the windward (northeast) side of the island, through Kalihi Valley into Honolulu on the leeward (south) side of the island. The Nuʻuanu Pali Tunnels are a set of four highway tunnels (two in each direction) on the Pali Highway (Hawaii Route 61) which pass through the Nuʻuanu Pali in Hawaii, United States. These tunnels serve as one of three trans-Koʻolau routes between Honolulu (leeward Oʻahu) and the communities of windward Oʻahu.
