Narrow your browser window to see left sticky column below. The column 1 "Name" and column 2 "Status of region" cells in row 1 use rowspan to span into row 2. When making column 1 left sticky, this makes the first cell in row 2, the empty sorting cell under "ISO", left sticky, so the sticky-table-none class is added to that cell.
You can add a table using HTML rather than wiki markup, as described at HTML element#Tables. However, HTML tables are discouraged because wikitables are easier to customize and maintain, as described at manual of style on tables. Also, note that the <thead>, <tbody>, <tfoot>, <colgroup>, and <col> elements are not supported in wikitext.
These two scrolling tables with row/column sticky headers are also automatically updated: Template:COVID-19 pandemic death rates; Template:COVID-19 vaccination data; See: Template talk:COVID-19 pandemic death rates#Automation of updates. More template styles for tables: {} - moves the sorting arrows under the headers.
For years in HTML, a table has always forced an implicit line-wrap (or line-break). So, to keep a table within a line, the workaround is to put the whole line into a table, then embed a table within a table, using the outer table to force the whole line to stay together. Consider the following examples: Wikicode (showing table forces line-break)
The two most commonly used classes are "wikitable" and "wikitable sortable"; the latter allows the reader to sort the table by clicking on the header cell of any column. |+ caption Required for accessibility purposes on data tables, and placed only between the table start and the first table row. ! header cell Optional.
The caption for the first table has <br /> tags as a small hack to nudge all three tables to have equally high (in line numbers) captions, for the appearance of tidiness. The three tables I have placed in columns (assuming a wide enough display) using {{Columns-start}}, which should responsively collapse for narrower displays (like phones).
