Leece-neville old logo. Leece-Neville is a global manufacturer and supplier of alternators, starters, electrical equipment and services to the transportation, industrial, military, marine, agricultural and construction industries. Leece-Neville serves as a division of Prestolite Electric.
Prestolite Motor and Ignition is purchased by investors, forming Prestolite Electric, Inc. 1987: July: Prestolite acquires the Leece-Neville division of Sheller-Globe Corporation of Cleveland, Ohio. The Toledo, Ohio operations become part of the alternator products division. 1987
In 1987, the Leece-Neville division was sold to Prestolite Electric. That same year the Globe-Weis company was sold to the American Trading and Production Company. In the mid-1980s, Sheller-Globe began fine-tuning its operations, largely abandoning automotive replacement parts (aftermarket) sales.
In 1902, what had by then become Joseph Lucas Ltd, incorporated in 1898, started making automotive electrical components such as magnetos, alternators, windscreen wipers, horns, lighting, wiring and starter motors. [1] The company started its main growth in 1914 with a contract to supply Morris Motors Limited with electrical equipment. [1]

The Coffman engine starter (also known as a "shotgun starter") was a starting system used on many piston engines in aircraft and armored vehicles of the 1930s and 1940s. It used a cordite cartridge to move a piston, which cranked the engine.
