By 1935, the Rhode Island State Library was administering state aid for community libraries and library extension service. [4] The Department of State Library Services (now OLIS) was founded in 1964 as a result of legislation initiated by the Rhode Island Library Association, taking over some of these roles from the State Library. The Rochambeau Library— A Community Library of Providence is an historic public library building at 708 Hope Street in Providence, Rhode Island. It was originally a single-story brick structure with limestone trim, designed by Wallis E. Howe and built in 1930.
The building is open to the public, but only members can check out items from the collection. The library was established in 1836 as a merger between two earlier subscription libraries: The Providence Library Company, founded in 1753, and the Providence Athenaeum, founded in 1831.
Today, the library's collection totals approximately 70,000 books. The East Smithfield Public Library was born in 1967, when the boards of the Bernon and Esmond libraries decided to consolidate. Bernon Library was designated as a reading center, and one librarian managed both buildings.
