University of Nebraska at Kearney (UNK) is located in the city. The campus is a 235-acre (0.95 km 2) residential campus with more than 37 buildings. It was founded in 1905 as Nebraska State Normal School at Kearney and became Nebraska State Teachers College in 1921. Between 1963 and 1991 the school was known as Kearney State College.
The Tri-Cities is an area of Nebraska consisting of the cities of Grand Island, Hastings, and Kearney.It has a population of 174,530 as of 2020. [1] [2] [3] The Tri-Cities region is not an official Metropolitan Statistical Area or Combined Statistical Area, however the region would be Nebraska's third largest if it was, behind Lincoln but ahead of Sioux City.

The terrain of Kearney County consists of gently rolling low hills, mostly devoted to agriculture. The Platte River flows eastward along the north county boundary. The county has a total area of 516 square miles (1,340 km 2), of which 516 square miles (1,340 km 2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.26 km 2) (0.2%) is water.
