There is a basic half-hourly service (with peak period extras) from the station to Manchester Victoria southbound and to Todmorden northbound on weekdays. From there, trains continue alternately to Blackburn via Burnley Manchester Road and to Leeds via Brighouse. Westbound services run beyond Manchester to Wigan Wallgate and Headbolt Lane.
A ticket machine was installed in 2011, allowing passengers to buy tickets before boarding for the first time in almost 30 years. Recent work has seen the installation of an electronic passenger information system (PIS), giving details of forthcoming departures, and the car park enlarged [ 6 ] which is currently free to use.
In June 1845 the Manchester and Leeds Railway (M&LR), at that time a rival of the ELR, was authorised to build a single-track branch, the Copy Pit Line, from its main line at Todmorden to Burnley; whilst it was under construction the M&LR amalgamated with other railways in 1847 to create the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway (LYR), and on 12 November 1849, the branch was opened by the LYR.
Following the singling of the track in December 1986, Burnley Central has only one platform in use. There is a small ticket office, waiting area and public address facility. There are information boards at the entrance of the station and in the booking hall, along with passenger information screens on the platform.
In May 2020, it was announced that the X43 would be curtailed to Burnley. A new service, branded Pendle Wizz, was introduced between Burnley and Skipton, following the same route as the X43. [25] In April 2023, Pendle Wizz was replaced by the introduction of service M6 – an expansion to Burnley's Mainline bus network. [26]
