Morgan Lewis was founded in Philadelphia on March 10, 1873, by Civil War veteran Charles Eldridge Morgan, Jr., who later served as Philadelphia Law Academy's vice president, [5] [6] and Francis Draper Lewis, son of a wholesale dry goods merchant, whose first cousin was William Draper Lewis, [7] the dean of University of Pennsylvania Law School.
In 1951, the firm hired John C. Bogle, who succeeded Morgan as chairman in 1970. In 1967, Wellington merged with Boston-based investment management firm Thorndike, Doran, Paine & Lewis. Morgan Lewis was born on October 16, 1754, of Welsh descent, the second son of Francis Lewis (1713–1802) and Elizabeth (née Annisley) Lewis (1715–1778). Lewis grew up in Elizabethtown, New Jersey, [1] where he decided to dedicate himself to the ministry. [2]
