State Route 233 extended north along current SR 806 from US 17 at Morrisville via Elk Run and Bristersburg to SR 28 at Catlett. 6.6 miles (10.6 km) at the south end were added to the state highway system in 1928 as State Route 708, [12] which was extended 2.5 miles (4.0 km) in 1929, [13] 5 miles (8.0 km) in 1930, [14] and another 4.2 miles (6.8 km) past Catlett in 1932. Developing from a concentration of taverns and rest stops along the Great Wagon Road (present-day U.S. Route 11), the original 1.1-square mile town was established on November 10, 1792, by an act passed by the Virginia General Assembly. The town of Christiansburg was later incorporated on January 7, 1833.
