This motion is critical to the use of film in a movie camera or movie projector. The reason the intermittent mechanism "works" for the viewer is because of a phenomenon called persistence of vision.

On the other hand, fast motion is the opposite of slow motion, filming at a lower frame rate and then playing the film back at a normal speed. This creates a sped-up effect which can help to emphasize passage of time, or create a sense of urgency.
