The Weather Channel was founded on July 18, 1980, [9] by television meteorologist John Coleman (who had served as a chief meteorologist at ABC owned-and-operated station WLS-TV in Chicago and as a forecaster for Good Morning America) and Frank Batten, then-president of the channel's original owner Landmark Communications (now Landmark Media Enterprises).
In 1974 another radar was installed in Marseilles greatly improving the radar coverage in Central Illinois. [2] A new radar, WSR-74C, was installed in Moline and helped the Peoria NWS issue severe weather warnings for the region. [2] In 1980 the Springfield office received a WSR-74C radar system to use for local warning operations. [2]

While North Utica is the proper name for the city, advertising on nearby Interstates 80 and 39 refers to the village by its original name, Utica. In addition, people who live in the area, official Interstate signage, and signs indicating the city limits all refer to the town as Utica.
