In 1905, Pope Pius X erected the Diocese of Oklahoma, suppressing the apostolic vicariate. The pope named Meerschaert as its first bishop of the new diocese. St. Joseph's Church was designated as its cathedral. [5] The Indian Territory became the State of Oklahoma in 1907.
Ginther designed an alternate plan for the church trustees who had concerns about Curtin's design. All that remains of Ginther's work is a set of blueprints. In 1951, Pope Pius XII erected the Diocese of Dodge City, taking its territory from the Diocese of Wichita. [6] He named Monsignor John Baptist Franz from the Diocese of Alton as the first bishop of Dodge City. [7] At that time, Sacred Heart Church in Dodge City became the diocesan cathedral.
