Southend-on-Sea (/ ˌ s aʊ θ ɛ n d ɒ n ˈ s iː / ⓘ), commonly referred to as Southend (/ s aʊ ˈ θ ɛ n d /), is a coastal city and unitary authority area with borough status in south-eastern Essex, England. It lies on the north side of the Thames Estuary, 40 miles (64 km) east of central London.

The parish of Southchurch was absorbed by the borough of Southend-on-Sea on 1 November 1897. The parish of Eastwood formerly included a detached area on Wallasea Island, some 8 miles (13 km) north-east from the main part of the parish. After the main part of the parish was absorbed into Southend in 1933 the former detached area persisted as a parish called Eastwood until 1946, when it was added to the parish of Canewdon. [8] [9]
