Heard Island and McDonald Islands in the Southern Ocean A map of Heard Island and McDonald Islands. Heard Island, by far the largest of the group, is a 368-square-kilometre (142 sq mi) mountainous island covered by 41 glaciers [22] (the island is 80% covered with ice [2]) and dominated by the Big Ben massif.
The McDonald Islands comprise three islands: McDonald Island, Flat Island (which later merged with McDonald Island) and Meyer Rock. The islands are mostly composed of phonolitic low-silica pumice, dikes and lava domes, and sit atop a submarine plateau, the Kerguelen Plateau. They are located about 75 km from Heard Island. Big Ben is the large massif to the bottom right (southeast) of this image of Heard Island, from NASA WorldWind. Big Ben formed about one million years ago. [5] Volcanic activity at the cone has been known since 1881. An eruption occurred in 1993. [6] Satellite images detected eruptions during 2000.
The islands are small and rocky. In 1980, they consisted of McDonald Island (186 metres (610 ft) high), Flat Island (55 metres (180 ft) high) and Meyer Rock (170 metres (560 ft) high). They totalled approximately 2.5 square kilometres (1.0 sq mi) in area. Like Heard Island, they were surface exposures of the Kerguelen Plateau. [2] [3]
