Harriette (sometimes spelled Harrietta) Amelia Keyser was born in New York City, July 27, 1841, [a] the daughter of John Howard and Harrietta Ward Dixon Tuthill Keyser. Her great-grandfather, Michael Keyser, came to New York City from Austria, although it was a tradition in the family that the Keysers were originally Hollanders and that one of the members settled in Austria.
