The portion of SR 66 between Washington Avenue in Piqua and the Miami/Shelby County line is designated as the "Cpl. Samuel F. Pearson Memorial Highway", [2] in honor of a Piqua High School graduate who was killed at Camp Victory in Baghdad, Iraq, while serving in the Army Reserve, on October 10, 2007.
Piqua was incorporated as a town by the Ohio General Assembly in 1823. During the War of 1812, Piqua was a waystation for men and supplies moving north. In 1819, a land office was established in Piqua which facilitated its growth. Piqua developed along with construction of the Miami and Erie Canal between 1825 and 1845.
The Piqua Historical Area [13] features a replica canal boat and other related items. Anthony Wayne Trail (part of U.S. Route 24 and State Route 25) in and around Toledo, originally named Canal Boulevard, was built on the canal right-of-way, and various relics of the canal survive along the corridor.
