Stanley is the only major city in Mountrail County, North Dakota, United States. It is the county seat of Mountrail County. [5] The population was 2,321 at the 2020 census, [3] making it the 22nd largest city in North Dakota. Stanley was founded in 1902. The permanent camp opened in 1927. The camp included 41 wood-frame cabins and an office in an area composed mostly of firs and pines, with a single giant sequoia. The cabins were built between 1926 and 1940 with low shingled roofs. Most cabins had outdoor cooking porches covered with canvas flies. One cabin became an employee residence.
