The Roxie Theater, also known as the Roxie Cinema or just The Roxie, is a historic movie theater, founded in 1912, at 3117 16th Street in the Mission District of San Francisco. It is a non-profit community arthouse cinema.
The Roxie opened on November 25, 1931, with screenings of Honor of the Family and the Laurel and Hardy film Come Clean. [4] On August 4, 1943, 37-year-old Roxie Theatre manager Harry R. Metzger died of a heart attack while operating the box office. [7] On December 24, 1954, a woman committed suicide in the Roxie auditorium during a showtime.
Warren Zevon's live album, Stand in the Fire, was recorded during five shows he played at The Roxy in April 1980. He also recorded another album, Live at The Roxy, in April 1978, and this was released in 2020. The Tragically Hip recorded Live at the Roxy in 1991. Jazz group The Crusaders recorded the live album Scratch at the Roxy in 1974.
