Steel production by countries. United States steel production faced a steep decline in the 1970s. As the only major steel maker not harmed during World War II, the United States iron and steel industry reached its maximum world importance during and just after World War II. In 1945, the US produced 67% of the world's pig iron, and 72% of the steel.
The two main inputs into iron- and steel-making are a source of iron and a source of energy. Additional requirements are a fluxing material to remove the impurities, and alloy metals to give particular properties to the metal. Raw materials used in US iron and steel production, 2012
The sum of the imports of the states is lower than the value of the United States' total imports. The difference results from goods originating from states of origin, returned goods and goods with unidentified states of origin. Overall, Texas has the highest export rank, while the Northern Mariana Islands has the lowest export rank.

[ 2 ] Iron ore was mined from nine active mines and three reclamation operations in Michigan , Minnesota , and Utah .

United States mines produced 1,170 tons of silver in 2014, 17% of the silver it used, while 63% of consumption was imported, from Mexico, Canada, Peru and Chile, and the remainder was derived from recycling. Three US mines had silver as their primary product, and 39 mines reported silver as a byproduct of gold and base metals production.
US production of aluminum, 1940–2014. Data from USGS. The aluminum industry in the United States in 2023 produced 860 thousand metric tons of aluminum from refined metal ore (primary production), at six smelters. In addition, US industry recycled 3.4 million tons of aluminum (so-called secondary production aluminum). [1]
Texas has never been a major copper-mining state. Small amounts of copper were mined from Permian redbeds in Archer and Foard counties of north-central Texas in the 1860s and 1870s. Copper was produced in connection with silver mining in Culberson County in west Texas from 1885 to 1952. [57]
