Kenneth Morris (August 28, 1917 – February 1, 1989) [1] was an African American composer of gospel music and publisher who popularized several songs, including "Just a Closer Walk with Thee". Morris was born in New York in 1917 and performed in church as a youth before becoming a professional jazz musician.

Janz began his music career in the 1970s with his brother, cousin, and friends in several bands under the names Danny and Paul, Danny Paul and Wayne, the Janz Team Singers and, finally, Deliverance. Brought up in a Mennonite family, he first learned the trumpet and by age 13 was engaged with his local chapter of the Salvation Army.
It was not until he played this song at his home church Soul Survivor, and his pastor told him to play the song more often, that he realized the potential the song had. Since then, this song has spread and become widely known. Hughes himself said. "No one has been more surprised than myself at seeing how God has used this worship song."
