The NHS Confederation, formerly the National Association of Health Authorities and Trusts, is a membership body for organisations that commission and provide National Health Service services founded in 1990. The predecessor organisation was called the National Association of Health Authorities in England and Wales.
Originally established as a special health authority on 28 June 2012, it became a non-departmental public body (NDPB) on 1 April 2015 under the provisions of the Care Act 2014. [4] Dr Navina Evans, Chief Executive of East London NHS Foundation Trust, a psychiatrist, was appointed Chief Executive in March 2020, succeeding Prof Ian Cumming. [6]

Primary care trusts were abolished on 31 March 2013 as part of the Health and Social Care Act 2012, with their commissioning work taken over by clinical commissioning groups. Their public health role was transferred to local authorities and to Public Health England.
