Lot's wife (center) turned into a pillar of salt during Sodom's destruction (Nuremberg Chronicle, 1493). The story appears to be based in part on a folk legend explaining a geographic feature. [3] A pillar of salt named "Lot's wife" is located near the Dead Sea at Mount Sodom in Israel. [4]
Often the background contains a small figure of Lot's wife, and in the distance, a burning city. [ 19 ] Along with the account of Tamar and Judah (Genesis 38:11–26), this is one instance of " sperm stealing " in the Bible, in which a woman seduces and has sex with her male relative under false pretenses in order to become pregnant.
The story, recounted in the Book of Genesis, concerns the family of Lot who have fled the destroyed city of Sodom (visible burning in the background of the painting). Lot's wife disobeyed instructions not to look around and was turned into a pillar of salt – her form is just visible in the left background of the painting.
Lot admonishes them for their wickedness, and offers the mob his two virgin daughters instead. When the mob refuses Lot's offer, the angels strike them with blindness, and then warn Lot to leave the city before it is destroyed. [2] Verse 14 states that Lot has sons-in-law, "which married his daughters". [3]
Another (fol. 14) includes one wife, presumably Noah's, named Sphiarphara. [15] A Middle English illustrated version of Genesis dating to the 13th century also gives Puarphara as Noah's wife. In medieval mystery plays Noah's wife is often portrayed as a comical harridan who refuses to board the arc and has to be dragged into it by force [16]

Lot rests drunk in the arms of one of his daughters, while the other, standing up, points with one hand towards the outside of the cave where they have taken refuge; we glimpse the mother turned into a pillar of salt, and in the distance Sodom in flames. In this theatrical way, the young woman argues the reasons for having to sleep with her father.
In a now-viral video, singer Alicia Keys went on a 'major rant' against labels and gender stereotypes -- and her husband, Swizz Beatz, completely agrees.
