Muskegon County (/ m ə ˈ s k iː ɡ ən / mə-SKEE-gən) is a county in the U.S. state of Michigan.As of 2020, the population was 175,824. [2] The county seat is Muskegon. [3]Muskegon County comprises the Muskegon, MI Metropolitan Statistical Area, which is part of the larger Grand Rapids-Kentwood-Muskegon, MI Combined Statistical Area.
An early bill passed by the Michigan Legislature was a drainage act, which led to the creation of drain commissioners at the township level. In 1897, township drain commissioners were abolished and the position was transferred to county government. [2] [3] Over the years, proposals have been made to reform and even abolish the office.
The center of the township is 7 miles (11 km) by road northeast of Fruitport, 13 miles (21 km) southeast of Muskegon, the county seat, and 14 miles (23 km) northwest of Coopersville. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 24.1 square miles (62 km 2), of which 0.03 square miles (0.08 km 2), or 0.10%, are water. [1]
The township is in western Muskegon County, bordered to the west by Lake Michigan and to the south by the cities of Muskegon and North Muskegon.According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 18.7 square miles (48 km 2), of which 17.4 square miles (45 km 2) are land and 1.3 square miles (3.4 km 2), or 6.97%, are water.
The township is in central Muskegon County and is bordered to the southwest by the city of Muskegon and to the west by the city of North Muskegon.According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 23.8 square miles (62 km 2), of which 23.5 square miles (61 km 2) are land and 0.4 square miles (1.0 km 2), or 1.54%, are water.
