The teams will play a 54-game regular season with top 8 teams from each conference advancing to the playoffs. In the first round of the playoffs, the first seed in each conference will play the eighth seed, the second seed will play the seventh seed, the third seed will play the sixth seed, and the fourth seed will play the fifth seed.
Changes to the league alignment and schedule that were originally to take place during the 2020–21 BCHL season came into effect. The Prince George Spruce Kings and Cranbrook Bucks joined the seven teams in the Interior Division to form the Interior Conference and the remaining nine teams from the Mainland and Island divisions were merged into the Coastal Conference. The league was founded as the Okanagan-Mainland Junior "A" Hockey League (OMJHL) in 1961 by the owners of four regional Junior "B" teams. It later expanded into the Lower Mainland and Vancouver Island and was renamed the British Columbia Junior Hockey League in 1967. It was renamed the British Columbia Hockey League (BCHL) in 1995.
