A lithium-ion or Li-ion battery is a type of rechargeable battery that uses the reversible intercalation of Li + ions into electronically conducting solids to store energy. In comparison with other commercial rechargeable batteries, Li-ion batteries are characterized by higher specific energy, higher energy density, higher energy efficiency, a longer cycle life, and a longer calendar life.
A typical lithium-ion battery can generate approximately 3 volts per cell, compared with 2.1 volts for lead-acid and 1.5 volts for zinc-carbon. Lithium-ion batteries, which are rechargeable and have a high energy density, differ from lithium metal batteries, which are disposable batteries with lithium or its compounds as the anode.
Prices of lithium-ion batteries have fallen over time. Overall, between 1991 and 2018, prices for all types of lithium-ion cells (in dollars per kWh) fell approximately 97%. [79] Over the same time period, energy density more than tripled. [79] Efforts to increase energy density contributed significantly to cost reduction. [83]
Lithium-ion battery, a rechargeable battery in which lithium ions move from the negative electrode to the positive electrode during discharge and back when charging Aqueous lithium-ion battery; Lithium-ion flow battery; Lithium ion manganese oxide battery; Lithium polymer battery; Lithium–silicon battery; Lithium-titanate battery
There are additional names used for ions with multiple charges. For example, an ion with a −2 charge is known as a dianion and an ion with a +2 charge is known as a dication. A zwitterion is a neutral molecule with positive and negative charges at different locations within that molecule. [17]
The material has attracted attention as a component of lithium iron phosphate batteries, [1] a type of Li-ion battery. [2] This battery chemistry is targeted for use in power tools , electric vehicles , solar energy installations [ 3 ] [ 4 ] and more recently large grid-scale energy storage .
It is commonly used as Li-ion source in electrolytes for Li-ion batteries as a safer alternative to commonly used lithium hexafluorophosphate. [3] It is made up of one Li cation and a bistriflimide anion.
Lithium chloride is a chemical compound with the formula Li Cl.The salt is a typical ionic compound (with certain covalent characteristics), although the small size of the Li + ion gives rise to properties not seen for other alkali metal chlorides, such as extraordinary solubility in polar solvents (83.05 g/100 mL of water at 20 °C) and its hygroscopic properties.
