Samuel James Ervin III (March 2, 1926 – September 18, 1999) was a United States circuit judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit and the son of United States Senator Sam Ervin.
Ervin's son, Samuel J. Ervin, III, was appointed in 1980 to the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit by President Jimmy Carter. [8] His grandson, Sam J. Ervin, IV , was elected in 2008 to the North Carolina Court of Appeals [ 36 ] and in 2014 to the North Carolina Supreme Court. [ 37 ]
