Vizard was born in Melbourne, Australia, on 6 March 1956, the son of Godfrey Lancelot Pitt Vizard and June Purtell.He grew up in the Melbourne suburb of Hawthorn and was educated at Hawthorn West Primary School and Carey Baptist Grammar School.
