The World English Bible translates the passage as: 23 "If therefore you are offering your gift at the altar, and there remember that your brother has anything against you, 24 leave your gift there before the altar, and go your way. First be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift. The Novum Testamentum Graece text is:
The offering in Christianity is a gift of money to the Church. In general, the offering is differentiated from the tithe as being funds given by members for general purposes over and above what would constitute a tithe. In verse 3 the emphasis seems to be the word "your." These traditions were not instituted by God, or by the ancient Patriarchs and Prophets, rather they were only invented in Jesus' time by the Scribes and Pharisees. Honour in this place, as often in Scripture, seems to signify not only reverence, but help, almsgiving, sustentation.
A bronze mite, also known as a Lepton (meaning small), minted by Alexander Jannaeus, King of Judaea, 103–76 BC and still in circulation at the time of Jesus [1]. Chrysostom: "A further reward also He promises, saying, He who receiveth a prophet in the name of a prophet, shall receive a prophet’s reward. He said not merely, Whoso receiveth a prophet, or a righteous man, but in the name of a prophet, and in the name of a righteous man; that is, not for any greatness in this life, or other temporal account, but because he is a prophet, or a righteous man."
When Nadab and Abihu lit the offering in the censers themselves, their fire was profane and thus God was not in it. [17] They prepared an incense offering upon kindling of their own and not of the holy incense from the sacred bronze altar. This was seen as foreign or unholy fire (Hebrew: אֵ֣שׁ זָרָ֔ה ’êš zārāh). [17]
An oblation is a solemn offering, sacrifice or presentation to God, to the Church for use in God's service, or to the faithful, such as giving alms to the poor.. The word comes from the Late Latin oblatio (from offerre, oblatum 'to offer'), 'an instance of offering' and by extension 'the thing offered'.
