The unincorporated community of LaGrange is in the center of the township, at the west end of LaGrange Lake. According to the United States Census Bureau , the township has a total area of 34.6 square miles (89.7 km 2 ), of which 33.2 square miles (85.9 km 2 ) is land and 1.5 square miles (3.8 km 2 ), or 4.19%, is water.

Cassopolis (/ k ə ˈ s ɒ p ə l ɪ s / kə-SOP-ə-liss) is a village in the U.S. state of Michigan and the county seat of Cass County. [4] It is located mostly in LaGrange Township with a small portion extending east into Penn Township.

A unique form of civil township in Michigan is the charter township, a status created by act of the state legislature in 1947, which grants additional powers and streamlined administration of townships. Charter townships that meet certain criteria are also provided greater protection against annexation by a city or village.
The county is named for Lewis Cass, [4] the Michigan Territorial Governor at the time the county was created in 1829. Cass later served as the United States Secretary of War under President Andrew Jackson, thus making a case for including Cass County as one of Michigan's "cabinet counties".
