RM 1061 was designated as Farm to Market Road 1061 (FM 1061) on December 16, 1948, running from US 66 (currently BL I-40) in Amarillo to a road intersection at a distance of approximately 10.2 miles (16.4 km). On September 21, 1955, the road was extended northwest 16.0 miles (25.7 km) to a point near Ady and was redesignated as RM 1061.
