The university was founded as San Jose Bible College in 1939, in San Jose by William Lee Jessup, the college's first president. Eugene Claremont Sanderson had originally started Evangel Bible University in San Jose in 1934 but was unable to make it viable. As a result, he recruited Jessup, one of his former students, to take over.
2014 – William Jessup University (now Jessup University) joined the GSAC in the 2012–13 academic year. 2015 – Concordia–Irvine left the GSAC and the NAIA to join the NCAA Division II ranks and the PacWest after the 2014–15 academic year. 2015 – Menlo College joined the GSAC in the 2015–16 academic year.
William Jessup University left in 2014, leaving the conference with nine members. Membership rose to twelve schools in 2015 when the University of Antelope Valley , Benedictine University at Mesa , Providence Christian College , and Sierra Nevada University joined; while Menlo College left for the Golden State Athletic Conference .

William Dean Jessup (March 17, 1929 – January 3, 2015) was a professional American football player who played wide receiver for seven seasons for the San Francisco 49ers and Denver Broncos. [1] He also played one season, 1959, with the British Columbia Lions of the Canadian Football League , where he was selected as an All-Star at defensive back.
