Phytophthora palmivora is an oomycete that causes bud-rot of palms, fruit-rot or kole-roga of coconut and areca nut. These are among the most serious diseases caused by fungi and moulds in South India. Outbreaks occur almost every year in Malnad, Mysore, North & South Kanara, Malabar and other areas.
The fungus survives the winter on the surface of the host plant, such as on bark or buds. [2] In late winter or early spring, rainwater washes spores into the buds as they burst. Once this happens, no treatment is effective. In the spring, about two weeks after blossom, new leaves emerging from the infected buds are infected by the conidia.
Other common symptoms are soft rot of cortex, dwarfing, dieback, wilting, and abnormal coloring of the leaves. [5] Small trees are killed rapidly by Armillaria tabescens and the symptoms aren't noticeable until the leaves wilt. However, on larger trees symptoms occur earlier and start as a thin crown with small leaves.
